”Die Größen von Fahrradreifen werden heute nach der Europäischen Reifen- und Felgennorm ETRTO (European Tire and Rim Technical Organization) bezeichnet. In der Praxis werden aber auch die älteren, englischen und französischen Bezeichnungen verwendet. Die ETRTO Größenbezeichnung (z. B. 37-622) gibt die Breite (37 mm) und den Innendurchmesser des Reifens (622 mm) an. Diese Bezeichnung ist eindeutig und erlaubt eine klare Zuordnung zur Felgengröße. Die Zollbezeichnung (z. B. 28 x 1.40) gibt den ungefähren Außendurchmesser (28 Zoll) und die Reifenbreite (1.40 Zoll) an. Es gibt die Zollbezeichnung auch noch in der Form 28 x 1 5⁄8 x 1 3⁄8 (ungefährer Außendurchmesser x Reifenhöhe x Reifenbreite). Die Zollangaben sind nicht präzise und nicht eindeutig. Zum Beispiel werden die Durchmesser 559 mm (MTB), 571 mm (Triathlon) und 590 mm (holländische Tourenräder) alle mit 26-Zoll bezeichnet. Reifen mit dem Durchmesser von 622 und 635 mm bezeichnet man beide als 28 Zoll. Kurioserweise werden Reifen mit einem Innendurchmesser von 630 mm als 27 Zoll betitelt. Diese Bezeichnungen haben ihren Ursprung - und ihren Sinn - aus den Zeiten der Stempelbremse. Damals war der exakte Außendurchmesser des Laufrades durch die Bremse vorgegeben. Je nach Reifenbreite gab es dann verschiedene Standards für den Innendurchmesser. Im angelsächsischen Sprachraum und im MTB Sport sind die Zollbezeichnungen weit verbreitet. Die französische Größenangabe (z. B. 700 x 35C) gibt den ungefähren Außendurchmesser (700 mm) und die Reifenbreite (35mm) an. Der Buchstabe am Ende gibt einen Hinweis auf den Innendurchmesser des Reifen. Das C steht in diesem Fall für 622 mm. Die französische Bezeichnung gibt es nicht für alle Reifengrößen, so wird sie z. B. nicht für MTB-Größen verwendet.”
